About FittBeat

FittBeat reads the back of the can so you don’t have to.

Every post on this site takes one product or one ingredient — a can of Coke, a bottle of Prime, a dye called Red 40 — and goes through it line by line: what each ingredient is, why it’s there, what the research says, and whether it’s worth worrying about. We flag the ingredients that matter, we say plainly when something sounds scary but isn’t, and we give a verdict at the end instead of a shrug.

Who runs this

I’m Johnny, and FittBeat is a one-person project. I spent years in law enforcement, most of it responding to and investigating crimes. I started FittBeat because when I was working, I kept picking up drinks marketed as healthy and finding ingredient lists that didn’t match the front of the bottle, and the articles I found explaining them were either fearmongering or written by the brands.

I’m not a doctor, dietitian, or food scientist, and nothing here is medical advice. What I do is research: I buy the product, photograph the actual label, read the FDA and EFSA documents and the studies behind every claim, and write up what I found in plain English with the sources linked. Where the science is unsettled, I say so. Where I’ve changed my mind or a product has reformulated, I update the post and note the date.

I realized doing this research and that growing up we were just trying to survive but we were filling up our body with nothing but bad ingredients. This is why our DNA keeps changing and mutating without us really paying attention.

You have to pay attention to the food and things we are putting in our bodies. We are hurting ourselves and I want to help with that.

What you’ll find here

  • Product breakdowns — every ingredient in a specific drink or snack, in label order, with a nutrition comparison against its closest competitors.
  • Ingredient explainers — the hub pages for the additives that show up everywhere: sweeteners, dyes, preservatives, caffeine, taurine.
  • The ingredients index — everything we’ve covered in one place, so you can look up what’s in your hand right now.

What you won’t find here

Fad diets, detoxes, meal plans, supplements we’re selling, or “shocking dangers.” If an ingredient is fine, we say it’s fine. The sugar in a can of Coke is a bigger deal than any additive in it, and we’ll tell you that even when a scarier headline would get more clicks.

How the site makes money

FittBeat is supported by display advertising and, where noted, affiliate links. We don’t accept payment from brands for coverage, we don’t take free product, and no company has reviewed a post before publication. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed on the post.
